The Ruzzini Palace Hotels it’s full of secrets, passion, history and mistery...

This is the glorious 17th century of the Serenissima and, within the city, the plague epidemic is now just a faded remembrance. Now among the calli there is only an overwhelming and relentless desire to live, or rather, to revive. Venice is the most cosmopolitan city on the peninsula: with one arm it stretches out towards the far East of silk and Cathay, with the other it reaches out to the artistic and cultural ferment of Europe. Yet, most importantly, Venice's soul is unbounded , and therefore a preferred destination for daring, rebellious, intrepid thinkers. In this era of rich intellectual fervour, the Ruzzini Palace is the intriguing and mysterious protagonist of a story destined to leave an enduring mark on the centuries to come: within its sumptuous walls, in fact, the most non-conformist Venetians secretly met together, following the motto of intus ut libet, foris ut moris est - do whatever you wish in private, in public, suit the customs.

Last night we arrived at the Ruzzini Palace Hotel pretty late, due to a delay in our flight from New York and, after giving the porteur our luggage, we were so tired we couldn't even take a look around. It's half past eight, the sunlight slightly filters from the window. I open my eyes, and for a moment I can't recognize where I am: clearly, this is not my room. Beside me, Sebastian is still sleeping so deeply that's such a pity to wake him up, but I can't wait to start our first day in Venice.

Jacob and I arrived in Venice yesterday, around dinner time. He's the director of an important multinational company, while I manage the accounts, so our job allow us to see a lot of cities all over the world and, even if it keeps us apart sometimes, this time I'm going with him in the city of love. I can't count the luxury hotels I've been into, but I must say that the Ruzzini Palace is one of the most breathtaking ones. We chose to stay in the Formosa Suite for the next three days, because it's perfect for our needs. In particular, we have a meeting this afternoon and this suite has a special room for meetings inside. Modern, luxury design It's a bright apartment, and the furniture is by Philippe Starck , an important french designer of the second half of XX century. It's more modern than other suites, but it still preserves that solemn air of antiquity that characterizes all the hotel. The window is the one where the Doge Ruzzini used to look out, and when we arrived they explained us that the palace is a bit crooked because he wanted to see the entire basins of San Marco and San Giorgio from the window. Useless to say, I am over the moon: I love the union of the modern luxury of the furniture with the Venetian tradition of the past, the paintings on the walls, the chandeliers. The bed is very big and yesterday evening, after a long, tiring flight from San Francisco I was so happy to see it, and to lay on it because the mattress is made to guarantee a perfect sleep for all the customers of the hotel. Spoiling yourselves in the hotel The hotel offers a lot of comforts, like breakfast in the room, that we had the pleasure to try this morning: bread and jam, coffee, milk and orange juice to begin this working day in the best way possible. The meeting will take all the afternoon, but the staff said it's possible to have some coffee taken directly in the room, when we will need a break to clear our minds. For the night, after a hot bath I planned to enjoy the package “best sleep in Venice” that I heard so much of: it consists on a balancing massage in the room, with a relaxing herbal tea before sleep.

Palazzo Ruzzini is open these days. Open, but without guests, in a city emptied by the lockdown. A city that hosts 23 million visitors every year: there are 370 visitors a year for each resident in the city center, where we are less than 54 thousand. Last year these days we were talking about this, and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the ONU agency of reference, was declaring these numbers warning us about the management of these flows. I walk among the rooms frescoed by Gregorio Lazzarini and Tiepolo, great eighteenth-century painters, I admire from the hall on the first floor the beauty of Campo Santa Maria Formosa , through the large windows that let the sun shine. It is one of the largest fields in the city: a total of nine streets and eleven bridges start from it. And I look out over Rio del Paradiso, where only a few rowboats or motorboats of authorized residents pass by. Venice is always enchanting, but the magic of silence amplifies spaces. It is a Venice unknown to most, and now I feel privileged to be able to live it and tell it to you. Every day it makes me think about you It is an unusual sensation and every day it makes me think about you, closed in your houses in every part of the world. To you New Yorkers, who are now in the Big Apple, a metropolis that was so far away from the emergency that broke out in China and then spread to Italy and Europe, is today one of the most dangerous emptied city. To you Spanish people, whose Madrid is one of the most affected capitals in Europe by the coronavirus emergency. To the French people, Paris and all of France in lockdown for almost two weeks. In Australia, Norway, Argentina ... there is no place in the world that hasn't been a guest at Ruzzini. And now all those faces are also linked to the news of beautiful gestures of solidarity between the countries of the world, which show us, right now that we are distant, that a world without divisions is possible. When we will start hugging each other again, let's remember this melancholy.

Waking up in an ancient Venetian Palace of XVI century, with the su that slightly filters from the window, is a unique emotion. It's official: our first day in Venice is beginning. Paul, the kids and I arrived last night, so we went immediately to bed. When we woke up this morning, we were starving, and we looked forward to try the renowned breakfast of the hotel we've heard so much about. Waking up in a beautiful Venetian Palace whit your family, have breakfast all together in an amazing common room where you can choose between a lot of proposal. Tap the botton and come to discover our rooms perfect to accomodate the families. A breakfast room fit for a king So we went down to the breakfast room... and we couldn't believe our eyes! In front of us there were a lot of tables with every kind of breakfasts! Sweet, salted, typically italian and international. Amélie and François' eyes sparkled: they had never seen a so large variety of desserts, cereals, fruit juice before. After we sat on the table, we started to explore the room. I couldn't resist the tentation to take a delicious integral croissant, a cup of hot tea and a fresh fruit salad. Paul opted for a salted breakfast, different from the usual: crispy bacon with rye bread: we were surprise that there was a whole gluten free menu for those who have gluten intolerance like Paul, so he could enjoy that moment with us. The kids obviously held nothing and tried a bit of everything, without leaving a thing.

Ruzzini Palace during the emergency: the hotel where I left my heart Based on a true story Contrary to what one might think, a hotel is not just a place to sleep. It's not just the place where you spend a pleasant stay during your visit to a city you love. In early March 2020 I spent a wonderful week at the Ruzzini Palace. It was my first time in Venice, and it goes without saying that I immediately fell in love with the city: my Saint Petersburg is certainly a city full of wonders, but what I saw here is totally different from what I was used to. As I walked through the streets and squares at sunset, breathtaking landscapes appeared before my eyes at every turn. They looked like paintings by an eighteenth-century painter, straight out of the paintings by Tiepolo and Lazzarini that can be admired in every corner of the hotel. What stayed impressed in my heart the most, however, was the visit to the Nuova Galleria del Vetro di Murano, organized by the hotel. Seeing the blown glass objects come to life in the hands of the craftsmen was incredible, and I must confess that I bought souvenirs for the whole family. A perfect emergency management However, by chance, my stay ended differently than I expected. Yes, because the time I spent there unfortunately coincided with a very difficult period for Venice and Italy: due to the Coronavirus emergency, the whole city went into lockdown. Despite what happened, however, and despite the alarming news given by the media and the increasing tension in the city, the hotel staff seemed to be unaffected. Everyone always had a smile on their faces, a gentle look or a reassuring word. On March 12, my last day, the return flight was canceled, and so all the other flights. I don't deny that I had really difficult moments of panic, because I didn't really know how to come back home. But it was there that all the staff really showed their presence. A staff made up of people, rather than professionists The director Sebastiano Cagnin, with his colleagues Mario, Stefano and Massimiliano, did everything they could to help and reassure me. They spent the whole night looking for a solution, sending emails and making calls to send me home as quickly and safely as possible. Although it was not their duty, they did all this for me. And even when, because of the tension, I started to cry in front of them, nobody got upset and they supported me, because they understood the crazy situation I was in. Eventually, they found a solution quickly and efficiently, and I have been able to go home. Honestly, I wish I hadn't done it, since I loved so much my stay at Ruzzini! They showed that their hotel is made first of all by people, empathetic and understanding people, who love their work and contact with different people and peoples, as well as professionists of the highest level. The love and gratitude I felt for them will stay forever in my heart, and for this reason I have talked about them to my whole family and friends, so they'll know that in Venice there is an hotel capable to do all this for its customers. I will definitely come back to visit them, and I've already planned to give a package for lovers to my son and his wonderful wife, so that they can try this wonderful experience too.
